3.5 starsTruce was a fun read, and I much preferred it over the previous book in this series Checkmate, but it was not as good as Playing for Keeps or Perfection. What made Truce a fun read was Robert (I do love those Bradford men). He is everything you expect from a Bradford, grumpy but charming, bossy but a pushover, possessive but he crumbles for his love, and hungry very hungry. Elizabeth is also a great character, full of strength and determination, not a pushover, knows what she wants and goes after it. I liked the interplay and sexual tension that RL was once again been able to create between her characters.
I really liked how the present and past were linked in this book, I thought is was really clever. By having Jason being told the story of his great great great whatever grandparents, it made a really nice link between the previous books in this series and this book. To be honest my favourite thing about this book, is the idea of the necklace, could that be any more beautiful and romantic??
However, it has to be said this book is not really a historical book, and if you are after a historical read this is not the book for you. This book may be set in the past but it does not read like one and the situations/actions the characters find themselves in would probably make lovers of historical reads pull their hair out with frustration. That is not to say I did not enjoy the setting or the time period. I did. I enjoyed it a lot, it made for a fun storyline and setting, but honestly I could never really believe the characters where actually from that time period.
That all being said, if you are fan of RL, I think you will enjoy this book, it has her humour, her charming characters, the love/hate relationship, and of course a happy ending.
Will I read it again? Probably

Truce The Historic Neighbor From Hell A Neighbor From Hell Series Book 4 edition by RL Mathewson Romance eBooks Reviews
3.5 Stars - It started a bit slow for me but it has all the good qualitites that the other Neighbor From Hell have. Elizabeth and Robert tormented each other as kids until Elizabeth went too far and publicly revealed that Robert still wet the bed at age 12. They don't see each other again until 14 years later during London's Season and even then they don't know who each other is but the attraction is too great and they have sex upon their first meeting. After finding out who the other is, they start the tormenting again but it's also lust and desire. Elizabeth gets pregnant has been working up the courage to tell him, he finds out and thinks she was going to tell him and forces her to marry him. Elizabeth had never wanted to marry and become property to a man that can control her. Robert is bent on revenge but when she starts bleeding the night of their special license wedding, Robert realizes that the past is the past and they should start over again. They move to America and Robert works hard to provide for his growing family.
LOVED this book!! I missed the Bradford’s but this was such an interesting take. This is Book 1, LoL. It is the very first Bradford story…back in the time of dowery’s and the expectation of being a virgin when you wed.
It starts when Elizabeth is about 5 years old…she has baby-fat and not all that cute but she is in love with James…super cute first crush. She HATES James’ brother…Robert. They make fun of each other…even get physical. It is Elizabeth’s fault that Robert is bullied for most of his adolescence.
Years later…Elizabeth is forced by her father to attend the balls of the season…he wants her to find a husband. At one ball, she hides out in this secluded garden and then she meets a very handsome man that choose that exact same spot to hide as well. They get to talking….and get hot and heavy…without even knowing each others’ name.
When they go back inside…they find out that they are enemies…Elizabeth just have something personal…to ROBERT!! At that moment, he sneers and can’t believe what he has just done!! Why does he still want her??
They are so mean to each other during the book…but it is super hilarious. They are grown and chasing each other around the house. Yet, they are also drawn to each other and want each other desperately.
You learn so much from this book…I love why Robert thinks he has such a big appetite and why it is a part of his lineage.
This is a Bradford story with an historic twist….really great and has got me back into the mood to read more!!
Elizabeth is a modern woman in the English Ton era.
Robert is a strong second son.
There was good chemistry in the beginning.
I don't buy this story. I just don't see that Elizabeth would have sex with a total stranger no matter how strong the chemistry there is between them. Her virginity was a prize that she would never just give away.
I also don't buy the way Robert would just throw his reputation or hers to the wind just to have sex in the orangery.
While this story was designed to answer some of the questions of the first Neighbors from Hell books, it fell flat on the actual story.
I don't see the point of swearing (using God's name in vain) in the internal conversations they have. I would think they would have better conversations.
Dont buy it. Everything was awful. The author writes modern day men as cardboard characters of a bad 90s sitcom. And the "regency" part starts okay but goes down hill quickly. The pacing is terrible. The prose is difficult to read. Punctuation needs some serious work. The story loses all tension midway through the book and never regains it. For some reason, the dialogue and prose willfully ignore regency book vernacular... I was baffled.
