Super quick and fun read. Merry is a quirky, not-wanting-to-grow-up kind of gal. Most readers cannot relate to her, but can have a good laugh with her.The book is a good introduction to Merry and her pre-CIA life, her CIA life, and her post-CIA life. Because it's the first in a series, it's left a little open ended at its conclusion.
Overall, the book is very clean. The writing is playful. The dialogue (inner and conversationally) is sarcastic, snarky, but realistic. The plot is not realistic, but who cares?!
The only thing I did not like about the book and the reason for 4 stars rather than 5 is that Merry is a bit damsel in distress at times and boy crazy. It's almost like she's 15 rather than in her 20s.
I am most interested to read future books where we can meet Merry's parents, learn more about her missions in the CIA, and her growth into a more mature and hormonally-stable woman.
This book came at a great time for me because I was reading a very long and theoretically-driven book that was pissing me off. I decided to pause that book and read something completely different. I know how this author writes, so I chose this one to read. It's perfect for the beach, a long flight, or a foul weather day and snuggling under a blanket with lots of tea.

Merit Badge Murder Merry Wrath Mysteries Book 1 edition by Leslie Langtry Romance eBooks Reviews
Laugh out loud hilarity wrapped around a solid plot. In Merit Badge Murder, Lelsey Langtry had created a fast paced delight with believable central characters that you will want to get to know.
Retired (not by choice) CIA agent Merry Wrath has no basis for living a "normal" life; she has no clue how to fit into the suburban life even in the town where she spent her childhood. But when spies start dying all around her she is ready for action. Well kind of. She does still have her secret agent brain and skills, just not the tools she is used to or back up from headquarters. Fortunately when the CIA decides to investigate her, they send her old (actually young and hot) handler. Unfortunately he brings even more trouble with him.
I LOVED it.
I loved this book from paragraph one! It's fast paced and hilarious. It is so well written and the author uses clever tactics to blend all of the genres that are represented in this book. Merit Badge Murder is a combination of a spy mystery, a romantic mystery and a cozy mystery; all wrapped into one. It's a fun read and the characters are fantastic. This story involves dead bodies, girl scouts and international spies set in Middle America. This book will keep you in suspense while laughing out loud and waiting anxiously to turn each page.
Merry Wrath is a former CIA agent hiding out in Iowa after her cover has been blown in Washington. She is a Girl Scout leader and has only one friend. Merry's past really catches up to her when an al-Qaeda operative turns up dead while she is camping with her Girl Scout troop. She hits and kills a Columbian drug lord with her car. Her old CIA boss shows up and forces her to look after an ex-Russian spy. Then, Merry finds a heavyweight in the Japanese Yakuza dead in her kitchen. Her new neighbor is a police detective, she is extremely attracted to him and he just happens to be working on her case. She must use her secret agent skills to figure out what is going on around her while she fights her attraction to her former boss and her sexy new neighbor.
Merry has very little time to solve the case before her cover is blown. With every major news station on her lawn it's not going to be easy.
I've read and enjoyed the Miss Fortune series but here everything is so forced. Almost every line is either a snarky comment or a description of a sight gag. The premise of being worried about her cover being blown is not very believable. She is living in her hometown with just different colored eyes and hair, a slightly different version of her real name and also hanging out with her best friend from childhood! It was a deal breaker for me. I like stories with at least some believable elements so the comedy doesn't seemed so forced in every aspect of the story.
This was a fun read. The main character is a former secret agent, outed to the public. Now she is trying to live a quiet life off the gird, having changed her name and appearance. Everything comes crashing down when she stumbles upon a dead terrorist at the camp she has her girl scout troop at. Add in a handsome new detective, a former Russian spy, her old handler and more dead terrorists and you are on the journey of who did it and who is setting her up to take the fall! The only downside to this book was her slipping into boy crazy teenager mode. It didn't fit the rest of her character and I would have preferred a more adult reaction to the interest of the two men. I would definitely read more by this author and look forward to the next in the series.
What DOES a CIA operative do when she's "outed" by a White House staffer and forced to flee killer chickens, yes - a chicken with a heat seeking missile strapped to its body and thrust in her direction? In this case, she changes her appearance and takes refuge in the small town where she spent her early years. As part of "normal" life, she becomes a Girl Scout troop leader at the behest of her best (and probably only) childhood friend. Our heroine's problem? She doesn't know how to do normal. Put her in a room and she can find a dozen ways to kill you (assuming you're a bad guy) but she doesn't know how to measure for drapes or otherwise decorate that room. But she's trying. Suddenly, corpses begin to appear in her vicinity (such as a Scouting camping trip); not just any corpses but some of the top terrorists in the world. Her new hunky neighbor, the one with the fully furnished house, turns out to be a police detective and her former handler, a hunk in his own right, appears to do damage control. Mayhem, murder, and mystery ensue with a dash of romance. Read this book if you're in the doldrums and want to be smiling - or just if you're sick of all of those fraught romantic suspense works that are cluttering the bookstores (and e-readers) these days.
