I first read this book because I begun to like the author. She is really talented to create new characters, with such different personalities but still so realistic.I think The Fire King is actually my favorite because of few reasons:
First, the main character, Soria, is able to speak any languages, something I would just LOVE to be able to do. But appart form that, she suffered a lot, because of the loss of her arm and the fact that no one around her really support her. But she still stand, she is willing to fact and to live her life.
Secondly, Karr tries so hard to be tuff and to act like he doens't trust her but he is nice and gentle with her anyway. And he is so... fascinated by this strong woman who doesn't fear him.
And finally, I loved that this story seemed out of time, in the Asian desert, with nomads and tents, not the usual urban fantasy that are so popular and so not origninal these days.
Anyway, I read this book in no time and I really recommand it to those who want to read a great story and escape reality for a moment.
Enjoy!!

great series
I have read all of the Dirk & Steele books and will probably read the next one "Within the Flames". But we are definitely at the three Strikes and you're out mark of a series. Between this book and "In the Dark of Dreams", I'm just about ready to give up on this series. The story line is becoming stale and needs an injection of some new ideas. This is such a wonderful series and there are still some characters that I would like to see them have their HEA but if the series does improve I will not be sticking with it.
Because this was the first book, I spent a lot of time wondering what was going on. There were past stories that I wasn't privy too that kept me wondering. But to be honest, I kind of like it that way. I liked not knowing how Soria lost her arm or what her relationship was to some of the other characters in the book was. It kept me guessing. I felt horrible for Karr and the way he was held at the beginning of the book, but didn't understand some of the things that motivated him or Soria to behave the way they did.
All in all, I really liked this author's writing style. I'm going back to read the first few books in this series to see where this story begins and evolves.
I have loved each and every one of the Dirk & Steele books, however this one was new and deliciously exciting. After a while one becomes used to reading about wilting heroines and dashing, charming heroes, or strong heroines that manage to work together with her mate to thwart the bad guy. That's what made this book so wonderful. There's a female who's disfigured and branching herself away from society, and a creature who's woken up centuries after his time with no way of understanding others and is considered something to be killed by others who knew him, a mentality which should have warped him into a twisted individual yet actually made him more...human so to speak. The combination of these two is enough to incite love in any reader, and there's just enough twists to keep one wanting more even after the story is ended. I very highly recommend this story to anyone interested in any sense of otherworldy, paranormal, or just regular romance for that matter.
wife liked it
I love anything by this author. She has a way of manipulating the words so that we connect to plot and characters and stay that way.
Liu's books are getting redundant. Really. As another reviewer has already said, it's a basic copy-and-paste job on the plots. If you want to know what the basic plot is, go read his/her review. It's pretty darn accurate. It seems that she's not putting as much effort into the quality of her works, and is just trying to crank them out for the editor. Her first five or six books are in among my favorites ever, but I find myself not enjoying her later books. The plot is driven more by the poor emotionally-wounded main characters than by any active events. Instead of a book being fun to get into, I find myself struggling to understand what Liu is trying to convey. In the Fire King, I found many holes that I couldn't get around enough to enjoy it, especially regarding plot. I feel that Liu is writing one thing, hoping her readers understand it, and her audience is getting something completely different out of it- quite unlike her old books, which were excellent in the pure simplicity of the story, leaving room for a lot of character development. Now, maybe I'm biased, since Dean is by far my favorite of her characters, but you still don't find anyone like Dela or Artur in her newer books. I'm especially disappointed that Liu doesn't bring back old favorite characters. The only reoccuring character seems to be Serena, for whom I didn't care much to begin with. All the old loveable people have disappeared. Sad day. So, I recommend borrowing The Fire King from the library or waiting til it's on the bargain rack before rushing out and buying it. My mistake. Liu's writing is still good, but doesn't come close to living up to its old reputation.
